Missy Vanover loves painting Florida's coastlines and colorful garden landscapes. She enjoys the constant interaction of land, sea, and sky, as well as the ever-changing palette of the ocean nearby. Painting predominantly in oil with a combination of brush and palette knife, she paints with thick impasto layers and creates texture. With acrylic, she enjoys creating interesting patterns with her brushstrokes. Her Impressionistic style paintings are often quite colorful and vibrant.
Originally from North Carolina's Piedmont followed by Northside Atlanta, she took an early interest in Interior Design and Architecture. She entered the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens to study Interior Design. Architectural classes were supported by drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, fabric design and art history classes among others. Surprisingly, it was the unexpected serenity in art history classes, where vivid colors and amazing combinations of patterns and textures of the Impressionists, Post Impressionists, Pointillists, Fauves and early Modern painters like Matisse, Van Gogh, Bonnard, Monet, Kandinsky, Seurat, Vuillard, Cross, Renoir, Picasso, Chagall and others inspired her to paint. After graduation, she returned to Atlanta and lived in Buckhead's design district. Working primarily as a residential interior designer, she began incorporating her decorative painting in her projects while experimenting further with oil on canvas. Missy began painting full-time about 20 years ago, and it was not long before she began showing her art in many fine southern galleries.
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, has been her family's home for the last 31 years. Favorite themes of her paintings are the beautiful beaches nearby, as well as the areas surrounding a family beach home near Vero Beach, Florida. Indian River Shores had been a second home for much of her life, and the area's tropical turquoise waters and sea grapes are still a favorite subject matter in many of her paintings. The North Carolina Mountains have also been a favorite subject, beginning with summer camp as a child, and most summers since in a family home in Blowing Rock. Her gardens are another favorite focal point, as she loves designing and planting gardens as much as she loves Painting and Interior Design.
